Central, W.Va.

A look at Central in 1889, a coal mining operation in the New River Gorge just downstream of the town of Beury. From the 1870s through the 1930s, thousands of people lived and worked in the mining camps in the gorge. Today, Central is a ghost town passed by thousands each year who raft the Upper New River in West Virginia's New River Gorge. See WVExp.com's article on Beury, West Virginia for more info about the coal mining operation at Beury and Central.
